Nothing but the Truth

Last week I happened to turn on HGTV’s House Hunters. A couple was looking for a house in California, having just moved from Australia. They specified two requirements—the house had to have a home office, and it had to have a “good vibe.” The reason they gave was their profession—they are professional psychics, and they would be entertaining clients in their home. They are “professionals,” meaning they are paid for their services. I mulled over this a bit. How does one go about selecting a psychic? What must their qualifications be? Do they need to show a track record of being 50% right? 75% right? And how does one determine how truthful they are? Do Yelp reviews exist for psychics?

Ultimately I was just sad for their clients, who are looking in the wrong place for direction, for a glimpse into the future, and for truth. After all, no psychic can claim 100% accuracy.

But, there is One who can. Last week I had the opportunity to speak at a women’s conference. I was able to share the story of the Bible to a group of wonderful women. (This is a shout out to Grace Church in Ridgewood, New Jersey!) As I prepared, I was reminded of God’s faithfulness. One hundred percent of the prophecies that God made about the coming Messiah were fulfilled—including His lineage, His place of Birth, His birth of a virgin, His death and resurrection. Therefore, I have full confidence that when we believe, the promises He has made available through His Son belong to us. And the best part is, we don’t have to pay a cent for them. We receive them by His grace, and His grace alone. Does this mean that we can open up the Bible and determine exactly what house to buy? Of course not, but He will give us the “good vibe” we are looking for when we look to Him for guidance and direction. He calls it His peace— “the peace that surpasses all understanding.” This peace comes from the confidence of knowing that “the Lord is at hand.” He is with us 100% of the time. And that is the Truth.

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.  Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:4-7
