Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

“So in retrospect, in 2015, not a single person got the answer right to “Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?”

I chuckled when I read this meme. And yet, it communicates a sad truth, doesn’t it?. Five years ago, some people may have viewed themselves in the future as married, or with children, or living in another city, or having a better job, or some fanciful combo. While it is possible that some of the things hoped for have been realized, there was no guarantee that they would come to pass. And no one would have seen themselves living through the current crises in our country and world. This stirred me to reflect--if I was asked this same question today, is there any guarantee that my life will look the way I envision it to in five years? God says there is. Consider this verse:

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1

So what are the things we can hope for? What are some of His glorious promises?

We can be assured that, today, tomorrow and five years from now:

  • “God will never leave us or forsake us.” (Hebrews 13:5)

  • By remaining in Christ, we will display the fruit of the Spirit. We will see ourselves as more loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle and self controlled. (Galatians 5:22)

  • God will supply what is sufficient for our needs. (Matthew 6:33)

  • “God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation He will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13)

  • “...that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6)

This is not a “wishful thinking” kind of hope. Because of what Jesus has done in the past, we can be confident in all these things, and more, for the future!
